UNIT 1

3.1 Unit 1 SCLY1 Culture and Identity; Families and Households; Wealth, Poverty and Welfare

Students should study
• topic areas in relation to the two core themes (socialisation, culture and identity; and social differentiation, power and stratification);
• both the evidence of and the sociological explanations for the content listed in the three topic areas below.

1. Culture and Identity
2. Families and Households
3. Wealth, Poverty and Welfare.

If you are taking this course at a college or by distance learning, your tutor will choose which of the three themes that you will be studying. For the purposes of this revision resource we will cover all three.

This unit is assessed by a one hour exam. Total marks : 60.
The exam comprises three sections, which relate directly to the three topic areas. You must answer all of the questions in the section that you have chosen.
There are 5 questions in each section and the marks go up as you progress.
The first question gives you a maximum of 2 marks, the second question - 4 marks, third question - 6 marks and both the fourth and fifth questions give you a maximum of 24 marks.

The marks awarded in this exam will count as 40% of your AS and 20% of your A level.
